British or American English in University Assignments? How to Keep Your Writing Consistent

For a UK university assignment, follow the English convention specified in your assessment brief or department guidance. If none is specified, British English is a sensible default. Use your chosen convention consistently in your own writing, but preserve the original wording of direct quotations, publication titles and official names. A reference to an American source does not require you to change the rest of your essay to American English.

British or American English in university assignments is therefore a question of requirements and consistency. This guide helps undergraduate and master’s students make those decisions, recognise meaning-sensitive differences and check a complete draft. The worked passages are fictional teaching examples, not extracts from published research.

Which English Convention Should You Use

Start With The Guidance For Your Assignment

Look for a spelling or language instruction in the assessment brief, module handbook, dissertation guidance or required style manual. Record the instruction before editing. A rule for one module should not automatically be applied to every course at the same university. If two instructions appear to conflict, ask the module team which takes priority for this assessment.

The Open University guidance on editing and checking tells its students to use UK English spelling. By contrast, Durham’s first-year physics report guidance accepts American spellings while preferring British spellings and requiring consistency. These are specific examples, not a rule covering every UK university.

You can read the precise wording in Durham’s physics report writing guidance.

Distinguish Student Requirements From House Style

A university website may publish a house style for staff communications. It can provide useful spelling examples without being the assessment policy for your essay. The University of Oxford expressly describes its style guide as guidance for staff writing on behalf of the university. Check the purpose of a guide before treating every preference as compulsory coursework practice.

If your course gives no preference, adopt British English for your own prose and write that choice on a small style sheet. If you already use American English confidently, seek clarification before converting a long dissertation. There is no basis here for promising that either convention will earn or lose a particular number of marks.

British And American Spellings You Will Meet Most Often

These examples are a working checklist, not a rule for changing every similar ending. Check unfamiliar words individually. In particular, British English has more than one accepted convention for some words ending in -ise or -ize.

British FormAmerican FormUsage Note
behaviour; colourbehavior; colorCommon -our / -or differences.
centrecenterPreserve the spelling in official names.
analyseanalyzeUse analyse in the British prose adopted here.
travelling; travelledtraveling; traveledReview related forms together.
defencedefenseKeep source titles unchanged.
organise; organisationorganize; organization-ize is also accepted in some British conventions.
metremeterMetre is the British length unit; a measuring device is a meter.

Table 1. Common spelling comparisons, with exceptions that require a contextual check.

For example, “The organisation analysed consumer behaviour” follows the -ise British convention used in this article. “The organization analyzed consumer behavior” follows American spelling. Mixing “organisation” with “analyzed” and “behavior” in your own prose gives readers an inconsistent set of choices. The meaning may remain clear, but the editing is unfinished.

For university-published examples, see Oxford’s word usage and spelling guide. Its house-style preferences should be read within its communications remit.

Some Differences Depend On Meaning

Practice And Practise

In British English, practice is the noun and practise is the verb. Write “Regular practice improves familiarity with the method” but “Students practise the method before collecting data”. American English uses practice for both. A British spelling checker may accept both British forms because each is a real word; you still need to decide which grammatical role it has.

Licence And License

In British English, licence is the noun and license is the verb: “The laboratory holds a licence” and “The authority licenses laboratories”. American English uses license for both. The correction depends on the sentence, so replacing every occurrence of license with licence would introduce errors into British prose.

Programme And Program

Use programme for a planned course, initiative or schedule in the British convention adopted here: “The training programme includes three workshops”. Use program for a computer application: “The program calculates the estimates”. American English commonly uses program for both. Preserve the spelling of an official programme name or a software identifier rather than translating it automatically.

Why Ize Is Not Automatically American

British English can accept -ize in words such as organize and realize. Dundee’s communications guide recognises this flexibility while choosing -ise for its own copy. Oxford’s university house style also chooses -ise and distinguishes that choice from Oxford University Press usage. Your course may specify a preference; otherwise, make a consistent choice for words that allow alternatives.

See Dundee’s content reference guide for its stated spelling preference and treatment of original source wording.

Do not turn this into a rule that every -ise word can end in -ize. Nor should you change British analyse to analyze merely because you have chosen organize. Check the individual word in a reliable dictionary. Consistency means applying a valid convention, not forcing every ending to look alike.

Assignment writing skills for choosing and checking spelling conventions

What Should Stay In Its Original Form

Separate text you have written from wording you are reproducing or identifying. Your paraphrase follows your chosen spelling convention and still needs a citation when it conveys a source’s ideas. A direct quotation preserves the source’s wording. Changing color to colour inside an exact quotation solely to match your essay would alter the quoted text.

MaterialWhat To DoExample
Your explanation or paraphraseApply your chosen convention; retain attribution.Use behaviour in your British summary.
Direct quotationPreserve original spelling and verify against the source.Keep behavior if that is what the source says.
Publication title in a referencePreserve the title’s spelling; apply required reference formatting.Keep Organizational in an American book title.
Official organisation nameUse its official spelling.Do not turn an official Center into Centre.
Code or software identifierPreserve exact characters and case.Keep a parameter named color unchanged.
Your table or figure captionApply your chosen convention unless reproducing a title or label.Use colour in your own explanatory caption.

Table 2. Decide whether the wording belongs to your prose or to material that must remain identifiable.

A British essay may therefore contain both behaviour and behavior without an editing error: the first appears in your explanation, and the second appears in an accurately reproduced quotation. Record the reason for the exception. Do not add [sic] simply because a source uses a valid American spelling; it is not a spelling mistake.

Source titles also have formatting rules. A referencing style may require sentence case or particular punctuation in an entry. Apply those rules without casually converting the words to British spelling. If your departmental referencing guide explicitly addresses an exception, follow that instruction.

Oxford Editors’ reference and citation support is relevant when you need help checking source entries against your required referencing guide.

Keep Punctuation Consistent With Your Required Style

Spelling and punctuation are related editorial choices, but they do not form one automatic package. British academic writing does not universally require single quotation marks. The University of Sussex punctuation guide discusses both single and double quotation marks and itself recommends double marks. Your required referencing or disciplinary style may specify its own approach.

The Sussex guidance on quotation marks and direct quotations explains the need to reproduce exact wording and discusses quotation-mark conventions.

Record whether your style uses single or double marks for an ordinary quotation and what it requires for a quotation within a quotation. Check punctuation around quoted fragments against the same guide. Do not move every full stop inside or outside closing marks through a bulk replacement: the correct placement depends on the sentence and required convention.

Similarly, do not remove every serial comma because you believe it is American. A comma before the final item in a list may be required by a style guide or needed to prevent ambiguity. Follow the required style and keep meaning clear. A change of referencing system is not permission to rewrite quoted source wording.

Worked Examples For Undergraduate And Master’s Students

Undergraduate Example In A Media Studies Assignment

Assume the module requests British English with -ise spellings. This fictional passage is entirely the student’s own prose.

Passage — Original: The organization analyzed audience behavior during the festival programme. Volunteers practiced explaining the colour-coded seating plan.

Correction: The organisation analysed audience behaviour during the festival programme. Volunteers practised explaining the colour-coded seating plan.

The first sentence now follows the selected spelling convention. Practised is a verb, so it changes too. Programme and colour already fit the choice and remain unchanged. The revision changes language presentation, not the claim or its evidential strength.

Master’s Example With An American Title And Code

Assume a master’s student has chosen British -ise spellings. Organizational Behavior in Digital Teams is an invented source title used solely for this example. No author or real publication is implied; an actual assignment would need a verified citation.

Passage — Original: The chapter analyzes team behaviour and compares the argument in Organizational Behavior in Digital Teams with the survey results. The visualization script uses a parameter named color.

Correction: The chapter analyses team behaviour and compares the argument in Organizational Behavior in Digital Teams with the survey results. The visualisation script uses a parameter named color.

Analyses and visualisation are the student’s own words, so they change. The invented American title retains its spelling, and color remains the exact code parameter. Behaviour already follows the selected convention. A blanket replacement would damage the title or identifier.

At master’s level, the issue is often the range of material rather than a different spelling rule. A dissertation may combine literature from several countries, copied bibliographic records, interview quotations and software output. Checking the origin and function of each expression prevents a superficially uniform draft from misrepresenting its sources.

Build A Small Style Sheet Before Your Final Check

A style sheet is a short record of the choices you will apply throughout the assignment. It is an editing aid rather than an extra section of your submitted essay, unless the assessment asks for one. Keep it beside the draft and update it when you resolve a recurring uncertainty.

DecisionExample EntryWhere To Check
English conventionBritish English, following module guidanceAssessment brief or handbook
Alternative endingsUse organise and organisation in own proseCourse style guide or chosen dictionary
Meaning-sensitive wordsPractice noun; practise verbSentence grammar and dictionary
Quotation punctuationRecord the required mark and punctuation rulesRequired referencing or discipline guide
Technical vocabularyUse the defined term consistently; protect identifiersMethod documentation and original source
Source exceptionsRetain American titles, quotations and official namesOriginal publication or official record

Table 3. A compact style-sheet template. Replace the example entries with your actual course requirements.

For a group assignment, agree the sheet before combining sections. Ask each contributor to check their own prose, then give one person the final consistency pass. Record exceptions so a later editor does not “correct” a title or quotation that was deliberately retained. The same shared sheet can cover abbreviations and recurring terminology.

Students wanting guided practice can explore Oxford Editors’ academic writing courses. Developing an editing routine makes the choices easier to apply independently.

Run A Final Consistency Check

First, confirm the required convention and review your style sheet. Then set your document’s proofing language appropriately. The Open University describes the Word route as Review > Language > Set Proofing Language > English (United Kingdom). Menu labels can vary by version. Check the language applied to the existing text, not only the default for new documents.

Final consistency check for a university assignment

Next, search for likely variants such as behavior, center, analyze and organization. Review each match individually. Protect quotations, names and references before changing your own prose. Search related forms too: changing analyze does not necessarily change analyzed elsewhere. Avoid replacing word endings across the entire file.

Read tables, headings, figure captions, footnotes and appendices as well as the main paragraphs. Pasted material can carry a different proofing language. Where you have reproduced a figure or instrument label, compare it with the original and follow the relevant adaptation and attribution rules. Consistency checking should not silently alter the material you claim to reproduce.

Finally, compare direct quotations and reference titles with their sources. Read the edited paragraphs for meaning. A spelling checker cannot decide whether licence is a noun, whether program names software, or whether a US spelling is an official name. Accept or reject each suggestion on that basis.

For a final language review, Oxford Editors offers proofreading and editing support. Check the permitted scope of outside assistance in your university’s guidance and keep responsibility for the submitted work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use American English At A UK University

Check your assessment and department guidance. Some courses specify British English; others accept American English if it is consistent. Durham’s cited physics report guidance is one example of the latter, not evidence of a university-wide policy. If your course gives no preference, British English is a practical default. Ask your tutor if you want to retain American English in a substantial existing draft.

Will American Spelling Affect My Marks

There is no universal marking consequence across UK universities. Your assessment instructions and criteria determine what is expected. A valid American spelling is different from a misspelt word, but it may still conflict with a stated British-English requirement. Check the requirement and correct inconsistencies rather than assuming either a fixed penalty or automatic acceptance.

Is Organize Always An American Spelling

No. Organize is used in American English and accepted in some British spelling conventions. Other British house styles prefer organise. Follow any course preference and use a consistent valid convention in your own prose. Do not assume that choosing -ize permits changing every -ise word, or that British analyse should become analyze.

Should I Change American Spelling Inside A Quotation

Preserve the spelling of an exact quotation. Changing behavior to behaviour simply to match your prose alters the source wording. Check the quotation against the original and apply the required citation and quotation formatting. You can paraphrase an idea using your own British spelling, with attribution, but then it should not be presented as an exact quotation.

Should I Change Spelling In Reference List Titles

Normally, preserve a publication title’s original spelling so the work remains accurately identified. Apply the capitalisation, italics and punctuation required by your referencing guide. These formatting decisions do not normally require converting American words to British forms. Verify imported reference records against the publication rather than accepting every detail supplied by reference software.

Does Using APA Mean My Whole Assignment Must Use American English

Do not infer a coursework spelling requirement from the name of the referencing system alone. Read your department’s instructions on how APA is to be used for the assignment, including any language and punctuation requirements. If the spelling instruction is missing or conflicts with another guide, ask for clarification. Keep source titles and exact quotations faithful to their originals.

Why Does Spellcheck Accept Both Versions

Both may be valid words, or different parts of the document may have different proofing languages. A dictionary can also accept more than one convention. Set the appropriate language, but continue to check context manually. Practice and practise illustrate the limit: both are valid British words, yet only one fits a particular noun or verb use.

How Can A Group Keep Its Assignment Consistent

Agree a shared style sheet, based on the assessment guidance, before merging sections. Record spelling choices, punctuation requirements, abbreviations and protected source wording. Each contributor should check their section, followed by one final review of the whole file. Review headings, tables and captions too, and preserve deliberate exceptions in quotations, titles and technical identifiers.
